Welcome to the Art of Handpan Four Week Course!
Are you curious about the mesmerizing sounds of the handpan? Join the Miami Sound Institute for an amazing four-week journey into the world of Handpan where you'll learn the basics of playing this unique instrument. This in-person course will be taught by guest instruction Sofi Dias & MSI director Jared Bistrong and is perfect for beginners and advanced players looking to explore the world of handpans.

10am-12pm
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
- A varitey of playing techniques and styles
- Fundamental daily exercises
- Music theory and composition
- How to play in groups, orchesta and sound healing settings
- How to use sound as a meditative tool
- Basic breathwork principles
HYBRID LEARNING:
This course will be accompanied by an online platform where students will have lifetime access to video tutorials, exercises, and handpand resources.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:
The Miami Sound Institute's innovative teaching & learning system combines modern day learning theories with technology and the flipped classroom model. Each week students will work on basic exercises and patterns via videos and then have an opportunity to apply those exercises to a live setting while receiving feedback from the instructors.
REAL WORLD PERFORMANCES
Students in the Miami Sound Institute have a variety of opportunities to join live performances and Sound Healing Meditations with the South Beach Sound Healing Orchestra
Who Can Join:
This course is open to anyone with a passion for music and a desire to learn something new. No prior experience with handpans is required - just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm! You will need your own Handpan for this course. We do have local sources for purchasing Handpans.
ABOUT THE INSRUCTORS
Sofia Dias is a multi-instrumentalist living and working in South Florida. Graduated from Miami Dade College in Music Education in 2017, Sofia focuses on world rhythms and has been involved in various music projects in her community such as MiamiBloco and Sonic Shift. Sofia works with music in many ways, from performance to education to meditation. Since 2018 she has held an in-depth practice of the Handpan and has dedicated most of that time studying it in the context of sound healing. In February 2024 Sofia went on her first East Coast tour with the "Resound Handpan Group" where she performed and facilitated music workshops with world renowned Handpan players. Sofia's main focus is on teaching Brazilian rhythms and how to approach the Handpan as a dynamic drum.
Jared Bistrong is the founder and director of the Miami Sound Institute & The South Beach Sound Healing Orchestra. A Miami native, Jared has been a pioneer in the field of Sound Healing for over 25 years. His unique facilitation and teaching style has inspired an entire community of sound healers and musicians who over the last 5 years have held meditations for over 10,000 people in the community. He teaches over a dozen different sound healing instruments, the Didgeridoo, Hand drums and the Handpan and regularly produces large Sound Healing events.
