This time we'll be discussing the Eastern Coyote with Dr. Roland Keys of NCSU.
The Eastern Coyote: part wolf, part dog, extremely adaptable. 

 
In this one-of-a-kind performance, Dr. Roland Kays will present the latest research about coyotes to a soundtrack performed by Senator Jaiz. Making the most of the unique presentation space, Dr. Kays will explain how hybridizing with wolves and dogs has allowed these coyotes to rapidly evolve into a larger predator, helping them to fill the ecological niche left open by the local extinction of wolves in the East. Now that they have colonized all our wild areas, coyotes have begun to be seen in urban areas, leading to new questions about their adaptability to city life
 
 Eban Crawford/Senator Jaiz is part of the Television/Emerging Media Group at NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
 
Dr. Roland Kays is the head of the Biodiversity Research Lab at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences and a research associate professor in the Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology program at NC State. He is the author of "Candid Creatures: How Camera Traps Reveal the Mysteries of Nature" (Johns Hopkins Press, 2016).
 
BEFORE THE TALK BEGINS: Sigma Xi will be hosting a 15-minute "speed networking" meet and greet session for our pizza lunch attendees, with the help of STEM in the Park. Many of our attendees have asked for more opportunities to get to know their fellow members, rather than just sitting down with their pizza. We hope this short engagement will help increase our community connection.

(If you decide to come after this time, you're welcome to attend, but we might not have pizza for you.) Thanks to a grant from the N.C. Biotechnology Center and funding from the RTP chapter of Sigma Xi and STEM in the Park, American Scientist's noontime Pizza Lunch speaker series is free and open to science journalists and science communicators of all stripes, as well as any interested member of the public.
