About this event

  • Event lasts 8 hours

The William and Jane Carney Center for Business and Transactional Law and The Center for Transactional Law and Practice present the 9th Biennial Conference on the Teaching of Transactional Law and Skills.

By now, we hope that you’ve all seen the Press Release announcing the historic 6 million dollar gift from Emory’s emeritus professor Bill Carney for the formation of the William and Jane Carney Center for Business and Transactional Law. We are thrilled to jointly present this Conference, which will celebrate three pillars of the new Carney Center: doctrine, practice, and pedagogy. We will welcome you as scholars, lawyers, and teachers engaged in preparing students to become business and transactional attorneys.

The Change from In-Person to Online

Although we hoped to hold our 9th Biennial Conference on the teaching of transactional law and skills in person, we know that many of our regular presenters and participants may not be able to attend in person due to budget cuts affecting professional development funds. By holding the Conference online instead, we can make it possible for everyone to attend. Therefore, we now extend you this invitation to join us online on Friday, May 30, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (EST), to address our theme: “Integrating Doctrine, Practice, and Pedagogy to Prepare the Business and Transactional Attorneys of the Future.” We still expect to offer you an excellent program, with each presentation followed by a robust discussion. We also look forward to capping off the day with a virtual cocktail reception announcing and celebrating the winner of the Tina L. Stark Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Transactional Law and Skills. Nominate yourself or someone else for this award here.

Conference Registration Because the Conference is being held in a virtual setting, we can charge a much smaller registration fee than for an in-person conference. While we will miss sharing meals and informal conversations with you, we hope to make your virtual participation easy, enriching, and enjoyable. And we will enlist some technical help to make that possible.

Call for Proposals

We are accepting proposals immediately, from now through the end of March. You may present alone or with colleagues.

Please prepare to give a 60-minute, interactive presentation on any aspect of business and transactional law and skills education viewed through the lens of our theme. How do we bring the three pillars of doctrine, practice, and pedagogy together to help students become competent business and transactional attorneys?

You may submit your proposal electronically here.

For more information about the Conference, please contact Kelli Pittman at kelli.pittman@emory.edu.

Publication of Selected Materials

As in prior years, some of the conference proceedings as well as the materials distributed by the speakers will be published in Transactions: The Tennessee Journal of Business Law, a publication of the Clayton Center for Entrepreneurial Law of The University of Tennessee, a co-sponsor of the conference.
