About this event

About This Event

Join us on Saturday July 30th at 8:30AM for a 5K history tour and experience the rich history of Chinatown, including the dark origins of the neighborhood, stories of assimilation and sacrifice, and challenges that Chinese-Americans continue to face in pursuit of the American Dream as we run through the neighborhood stopping at highlighted sights. Along the route, we will also meet some of the newer small business owners in the neighborhood to learn about their own stories of struggle, perseverance, and entrepreneurship. Net ticket proceeds will go toward supporting the I.S. 223 Running Team, and help send student athletes to attend an enriching week-long running camp at The Running School.

Who: The run is led by Anna & Chloe of Mott Street Girls, and Leland & Run Coach Kai of Run for Chinatown

What: The 5K run begins with a quick dynamic warm-up followed by a 5K (3.1 miles) run and ends with a static stretch. This event will last about an hour and 15 minutes. We go at an average pace of 10-minute miles, and stop at various significant spots on the tour. We also stop for traffic lights and big intersections. All levels are welcome to join the run and every takes home a goody bag! Details below!

When: Saturday July 30th at 8:30AM

Where: Start and end at Lanterne Candle Lab | 69 Mulberry St, New York, NY 10013

Why: Learn about Asian American history and supporting local small businesses while fundraising for I.S. 223 Running Team to help send student athletes to attend an enriching week-long running camp at The Running School.

The Hosts

Mott Street Girls

Anna and Chloe are second-generation Chinese Americans who met through tour guide training at a local museum. Their mission is to make Chinese American history and culture more accessible to the public. By hosting Chinatown walking tours, creating educational social media content, and partnering with community organizations, they strive to preserve Chinatown’s rich cultural heritage, bring business to the neighborhood, and share the stories of our community.

Run for Chinatown

Run for Chinatown was born out of a series of running challenges to raise funds and awareness for the Manhattan Chinatown community. Now, we are a group whose mission is to inspire people through running. We host weekly runs and special programming to celebrate, empower, and provide economic support to the Asian & Pacific Islander communities in New York City.

The Beneficiary

I.S. 223 Running Team

The I.S. 223 Running Team is made up of students from the sixth grade through college. The team runs year-round: on weekends as well as during the summer months. The I.S. 223 Team has built an outstanding reputation throughout the five boroughs. Within the last few weeks members of the team paced a Staten Island Track Association member for a few miles during his 50 mile race and during the holiday week they ran in Prospect Park alongside members of the Run for Chinatown Team. Through a generous NYRR grant and the support of the I.S. 223 staff each year, twenty plus I.S. 223 attend a week-long sleep away running camp in upstate New York.
