The National Archives at St. Louis is pleased to offer research services for the textual records in our holdings.

Research visits are by appointment only and are scheduled no further than three months in advance. New weekly appointment blocks open each Monday. The Research Room is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

All researchers must register for a NARA Researcher Card. Researchers are encouraged to pre-register in advance of a visit. This process consists of two parts, including completing the Online Researcher Orientation and Online Kiosk Registration.

Researchers may request a virtual consultation. To request a virtual consultation, please email stlarr.archives@nara.gov at least two weeks in advance of your scheduled visit.

PLEASE NOTE: All textual research requests must be submitted in advance of your appointment. You can obtain request forms by emailing stlarr.archives@nara.gov. The Official Military Personnel Files are subject to the Privacy Act of 1974 and must be screened before being served in the research room. Additionally, requests for records affected by the 1973 NPRC fire may be delayed due to preservation efforts.


Additional records may have access restrictions. Access restrictions are indicated in the National Archives Catalog page for the records series. Researchers must contact The National Archvies at St. Louis (stlarr.archives@nara.gov. ) no later than three to four weeks prior to their visit if they wish to view restricted records. Unfortunately, staff cannot conduct on-demand, day-of screening.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Microfilm Appointment or a Textual Appointment?

Most of our records (Like the Official Military Personnel Files) are in paper format or "textual." However, Some of our most popular records like the Army and Air Force Morning Reports, and Flight Records are on Microfilm. If you're not sure, just email us at stlarr.archives@nara.gov.

What types of records does this facility have?

The National Archives at St. Louis houses personal data series records including Official Military Personnel Files (OMPFs), Civilian Personnel Files of federal employment (OPFs), Army and Air force Morning Reports, Courts Martial Records of Trial, Selective Service System Records, and much more!

Should I contact NARA in advance of my onsite research visit?

Yes, researchers should contact NARA at least four weeks in advance of your onsite research visit. Staff are available to provide you with advance consultation services, and answer questions you might have about your visit. You can contact a us at stlarr.archives@nara.gov

Can I obtain a copy of my DD-214 by visiting the Research Room?

That depends on when you were discharged. The Research Room only provides access to military records of vets discharged 62 years ago (or more) from today's date (including reserve time). To request a copy of your DD-214, visit: https://vetrecs.archives.gov/VeteranRequest/home.html

Can I obtain my civilian employment records or SF-50 in the Research Room?

Researchers must coordinate with the Archival Research Room to submit requests and forms needed for the visit. First time researchers are required to provide additional information and forms (see Archival Research Room, Policies and Procedures). Researchers are encouraged to submit these forms in advance.
