Overview

Learn how to identify, evaluate, and choose textiles for durability, performance, and circularity, whether you design or shop!

Join FABSCRAP’s 2-Day Intensive to…

Improve confidence in textiles, develop hands-on skills, and gain current industry knowledge in identifying fiber types and fabric construction methods to make informed, environmentally responsible selections, while evaluating recyclability, durability, and performance to support circular systems.

Agenda & Topics:

Day 1: Monday Nov 9th, 1-4p

  • Brief History of Textiles: An overview tracing the evolution of fiber and fabric production from early plant-based materials to modern industrial systems to better understand how past developments shape today’s textile systems and circularity challenges.
  • Weave and Knit Structures: A real-time examination of fabric construction enabling you to know the difference between various structures and how they influence performance, longevity, and appropriate use.

Includes interactive activities to learn weaving and knitting basics.

  • Fiber Fundamentals: A hands-on, detailed breakdown of natural, synthetic, blended, and regenerative fibers, helping you identify their properties, understand how they’re made, distinguish between them, determine their best uses, and evaluate their environmental impact.

Includes an interactive activity to identify various fiber types.

Day 2: Tuesday 10th,1-4p

  • Real-World Application: A practical exploration of how textile industry terms connect to everyday language and real-world design decisions. Translate fiber and structure into how materials are described, selected, marketed, and experienced.
  • Recyclability and Circularity Principles: An overview of how textiles move through their lifecycle empowering you to make strategic decisions that improve product longevity, reduce waste, and advance circular practices.
  • Industry Insights Panel: Engaging perspectives from industry professionals on current issues, innovations, and circular practices, supporting you to use the concepts you learned in this intensive and apply them in real-world contexts.

Leave equipped to intentionally choose textiles (fiber & fabric) for performance, longevity, and circularity — skills that are essential for anyone striving to be sustainable in design or daily life.

Over two sessions, participants will explore:

  • Fiber fundamentals: natural, synthetic, blended, and regenerative materials
  • Fabric construction, including weave and knit structures
  • Textile durability, performance, and end use
  • Recyclability and circularity in fashion systems
  • Current industry innovations and sustainability practices

*Interactive activities include hands-on fiber identification and foundational weaving and knitting exercises.

We are SO excited to host this 2-day intensive at The New York Sewing Center in Manhattan's Garment District.

Founded by Kristine Frailing in 2014, NYS has grown into one of the largest and most inspiring sewing schools in the country. Built on the belief that sewing should be accessible, empowering, and fun, the school offers everything from beginner classes to advanced fashion workshops — all led by a team of talented, creative, and passionate instructors. Together, we’re not only teaching people how to sew — we’re creating a vibrant community where creativity thrives and fashion dreams come to life!
