The Houston Barbecue Festival and Saint Arnold Brewing Company announce the 3rd Annual Tex-Mex BBQ Block Party to celebrate the growing influence of Tejano and Tex-Mex cooking traditions in contemporary Central Texas-style craft barbecue.

T he goal of the Tex Mex BBQ Block Party is to recognize and celebrate Hispanic pitmasters and all those who make this style barbecue, and provide a venue for Houston barbecue fans to sample Tex-Mex BBQ and great local craft beer.

Ticket holders will taste unlimited samples of each vendor's barbecue dish. Entry includes Saint Arnold beer.

Over the last ten years, Texas barbecue has been transformed by the "craft barbecue" movement which uses traditional smoking techniques and high-quality ingredients to produce barbecue that is unsurpassed in quality anywhere else in the world.

More recently, pitmasters with backgrounds in Tex-Mex and Tejano cooking have joined the craft barbecue movement and created a style of barbecue generally referred to as "Tex-Mex BBQ" that combines Mexican, Tejano, South Texas, and Tex-Mex cooking traditions with Central Texas-style barbecue.

A classic dish of this style is the smoked brisket taco with a handmade flour tortilla, chunks of smoky Central Texas-style brisket and various toppings such as pickled onions, jalapenos, queso fresco and guacamole.

But the prolific and creative pitmasters of Tex-Mex BBQ don't stop there. Other examples of Tex-Mex BBQ dishes include crispy prime brisket chimichangas con queso, smoked brisket flautas topped with salsa roja and cotija cheese, and smoked pork shoulder pozole dressed with pickled radish, cilantro and lime.
