Science Education and OutreachThrough our education and outreach programs, the goal is to provide science-based information about the Lake Tahoe region in order to foster responsible action and stewardship. We provide engaging exhibits, interactive hands-on educational activities, and conduct effective outreach to draw student groups, residents, and visitors to our facilities. <h2>Circumnavigate Lake Tahoe for Science </h2><h3>Tour Lake Tahoe as never before! </h3><p>Join the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center to Circumnavigate Lake Tahoe for Science. This kayaking event, TERC CIRC 2, will take place over seven days, starting Monday, June 20 and concluding Sunday, June 26.</p><p></p><p>Many people have paddled Tahoe’s shores, but this event is unique. In addition to each day’s 6-13 miles of spectacular shoreline paddling, you will get to see, share and learn about Lake Tahoe’s ecology, geology and emerging challenges. TERC’s scientific experts will be there to accompany you and to illustrate the science being used to restore Lake Tahoe, to lead you in scientific measurements, and to help you steer clear of Tahoe Tessie. </p><h3></h3><h3>Registration</h3><p>Come for just a day or two, or join the ranks of the epic few who have completed the entire circumnavigation. Space is limited!</p><ul><li><strong>Join for a day: $50</strong></li><li><strong>Join for two days: $100</strong></li><li><strong>Join for three days: $150</strong></li><li><strong>Join for four or more: $200</strong></li></ul><p><em>Note: Registration fees are non-refundable. </em></p><p>Paddlers will enjoy:</p><ul><li>Complimentary snacks and drinks each day.</li><li>Shuttle service from takeout points back to put-in points to retrieve your car.</li><li>Pre-launch coffee/tea and pastries, with a basic strokes demonstration before the initial launch on Monday, June 20.</li><li>A celebratory party with your fellow paddlers to enjoy food, wine, beer, and other refreshments on Sunday afternoon June 26.</li><li>A custom kayaking hat to ward off harmful rays and to mark your achievement.</li><li>The unique camaraderie of joining like-minded paddlers in doing a good turn for the lake.</li></ul><p></p>

<h2>Details</h2><h3>Boat selection</h3><p>The best watercraft for this event is a sit-inside, long, skinny, sea kayak. If you don’t have one, consider borrowing or renting—and kayak outfitters often sell-off last year’s inventory at discounted prices. The ubiquitous sit-on-top plastic kayaks seen everywhere on the lake will work and be safe, but will require more energy to paddle and will be slower. The same goes for pedal kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and canoes. Whatever your boat, you should be able to paddle five miles in two hours or less.</p><p></p><h3>Route</h3><p>Each day’s route will be near shore and extend for between six and 13 miles. We will take a break halfway on all but one of the days. The odyssey starts at Sand Harbor, NV, and proceeds counterclockwise around the lake. Route details will be provided after registration.</p><p><em>Note: should weather—especially high winds—be a problem on any given day, that day will be canceled and rescheduled.</em></p><h3></h3><h3>Launches and landings</h3><p>Paddlers will be shuttled from takeout to put-in each day, to retrieve their cars. Seven-day paddlers will also be provided with onshore boat storage at each takeout. Due to space limitations, those not doing the full trip will need to make their own arrangements.</p><h3></h3><h3>Safety</h3><p>All paddlers are required to wear a flotation device at all times. Group leaders will use two-way radios to communicate, and the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Tahoe City will be aware of each day’s plans. A TERC Zodiac chase boat will accompany the paddlers in case immediate assistance is required. A first-aid kit and kayak tow ropes will also be carried. We are currently seeking experienced kayak tour guides to accompany us each day; more information to follow.</p><p>All paddlers must be 15 years of age or older. Paddlers below the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.</p><p>All participants will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement prior to entry (see details below).</p><h3></h3><h3>Apparel</h3><p>Quick-drying synthetics are strongly recommended. T-shirts, jeans, and such, are slow to dry and could lead to extreme discomfort with Tahoe’s low water temperatures in June. A hat, such as the one you will receive for registering, is essential and sunscreen is highly recommended.</p>

<h2>Resources</h2><h3>Citizen Science App</h3><p>Please download the<em> </em><a href="https://citizensciencetahoe.app/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Citizen Science Tahoe App</a> beforehand if you wish to participate in the science data collection. </p><p>We suggest loading the app and signing up prior to your paddling day. You will receive the confirmation email to continue your sign-up process. <h3><a href="https://ucdavis.app.box.com/s/228lerpdmuyx0g7295743i7e8nlsu27x" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement</a> </h3><p>All participants will be required to sign a Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement prior to entry.  </p><p></p><p><strong>Waiver:</strong> In return for being permitted to participate in the following activity or program (“The  Activity”), including any associated use of the premises, facilities, staff, equipment, transportation, and services of the University, I, for myself, heirs, personal representatives, and assigns, do hereby release, waive, discharge, and promise not to sue The Regents of the University of California, its directors, officers, employees, and agents (“The University”), from liability from any and all claims, including the negligence of The University, resulting in personal injury (including death), accidents or illnesses, and property loss, in connection with my participation in the Activity and any use of University premises and facilities. </p><p></p><p><strong>Description of Activity or Program:</strong> Kayaking Lake Tahoe. </p><p></p><p><strong>Date(s): June 20 - June 26, 2022</strong></p><p></p><p><strong> Assumption of Risks: </strong>Participation in The Activity carries with it certain inherent risks that cannot be eliminated regardless of the care taken to avoid injury.  The specific risks vary from one activity to another, but the risks range from 1) minor injuries such as scratches, bruises, and sprains, to 2) major injuries such as eye injury, joint or bone injuries, heart attacks, and concussions, to 3) catastrophic injuries such as paralysis and death.   </p><p></p><p><strong>Indemnification and Hold Harmless:</strong>  I also agree to indemnify and hold The University harmless from any and all claims, actions, suits, procedures, costs, expenses, damages and liabilities, including attorney’s fees, arising out of my involvement in The Activity, and to reimburse it for any such expenses incurred. </p><p></p><p><strong>Severability:</strong>  I further agree that this Waiver of  Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by law, and that if any portion is held invalid the remaining portions will continue to have full legal force and effect. </p><p></p><p><strong>Governing Law and Jurisdiction: </strong> This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the State of California, and any disputes arising out of or in connection with this Agreement shall be under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Courts of the State of California. </p><p></p><p><strong>Acknowledgment of Understanding:</strong>  I have read this Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnity Agreement, fully understand its terms, and understand that I am giving up substantial rights, including my right to sue.
