About this event

Join us, with instructor Dan Hawkins from Bad Dogs Studio where you will learn how to make a “turkey-wing” style hand broom from start to finish. You will leave the workshop with at least one completed broom, and hopefully, the ability to make more.

The workshop will begin with a short introduction to broom-making, its history, and a dive into Dan's connections to the Shakers in Maine. Then, we'll jump into learning how to make a broom, select sorghum and hemp cord, and begin the process!

In this 3-hour workshop, babes will:

  • Learn about the history of broom-making
  • Make their own turkey-tail hand broom to take home
  • Pick up broom-making skills and insights including technique, broom size, & uses.

Please gather the following items for our workshop:

  • Pen and paper
  • Water and snacks
  • Anything you need to feel cozy, comfortable, and confident

We'll be gathering together at Seagrape Apothecary on October 12th from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Please arrive a little early to get settled in. For the sake of the container we're holding, and to minimize distractions, we'll be locking the doors 10 minutes after class starts. Please keep this in mind while making travel arrangements!

Seagrape Apothecary is now located at 2823 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland, Oregon 97232. Please DO NOT park in the Centaur Guitar parking lot! There's residential parking available just one block away, and a bus stop directly in front of the store for folks taking public transit.

About Your Instructor:

Dan was born in Maine and has worked as an architect & carpenter in China, Denmark, England, and the United States. He makes maps, utensils, furniture, buildings, and stories.

His recent work has explored and documented lobster fishing territory in the Gulf of Maine, the practice and tradition of “bodging”, or working with green wood, in southern England, and the history of broom-making in the United States.

In 2021, he moved to Portland, OR, where he started Bad Dogs Studio with his sister, Rachel. Bad Dogs make functional objects from wood, clay, and plant materials. Their work explores rituals and habits within the home, as well as the craft traditions and techniques associated with those rituals. They are constantly designing, making, and dreaming up the next creative side project. Check out Bad Dogs Studio's website and Instagram.
