TENDER

The Czech Center New York actively promotes Czechia by showcasing Czech culture, innovations and creativity in the US. Our program includes concerts, screenings, exhibitions, panel discussions, and other events dedicated to a vast range of areas from visual and performing arts, film, literature, and music to architecture, design, fashion, and innovations. In addition to hosting our own events, we support and collaborate with other groups dedicated to intercultural initiatives in New York and beyond.The Event organizer has the right to refuse the attendees entrance to the venue despite previous registration due to capacity and security measures. Participants must arrive on time, in case of late arrival, the organizer cannot guarantee that your registration will still be valid.

TENDER is a showcase of a segment of contemporary Czech photography. The exhibition’s title, as well as its concept, plays with the meanings of the word, which seem to be in contradiction. On one hand: softness, sensitivity, vulnerability, care – qualities that we now appear to be in need of defending more fiercely than ever in the last decades, on both sides of the Atlantic and all over the world. On the other hand, tender as an offer and a bid and the group exhibition as an unwilling contest of photographers, first competing for the attention of the institution and the curator and then the consideration of the audience: who and in what light should represent the broad spectrum of visual practices present in the Czech photography in the 2010s?

Michal Nanoru The former editor of Živel and Hype magazines has published extensively on music and visual culture in academic (Columbia University journal Current Musicology; Central European journal Media Studies) as well as popular press. He co-authored books Here Be Dogs (2010) on visuality of Czech independent music scene and We Saw Up A Cutting Board, a photographic history of Czech skateboarding before the Velvet Revolution (2013). His other major projects include online database and exhibitions BigMag – Other magazines in the Czech Republic after 1989 (Moravian Gallery, Brno, 2010; Dox, Prague, 2011), a comprehensive survey of snapshot strategies influence on artists working with photography Only The Good Ones: The Snapshot Aesthetic Revisited (Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague, 2014) and most recently Taryn Simon: A Soldier is Taught to Bayonet the Enemy and not Some Undefined Abstraction (Galerie Rudolfinum, Prague; Albertinum, Dresden, both 2016).
