 For the past twelve years, the law review essay <A HREF="https://openscholarship.wustl.edu/law_lawreview/vol85/iss6/2" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">"Technological Due Process"</A> has served as the intellectual foundation for the legal implications of government automation. In 2008 <A HREF="https://www.daniellecitron.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Danielle Keats Citron</A> of Boston University questioned how to maintain procedural protections in computerized systems. Predictive analytics, behavioral economics, and evidence-based policy dominate our interactions with the public sector today. Where are we now and what does the future hold? <A HREF="https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/people/anne-washington" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anne L. Washington</A> invites Professor Citron to NYU along with top legal scholars <A HREF="https://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/people/deirdre-mulligan" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Deirdre K. Mulligan</A> from University of California Berkeley and <A HREF="https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/law/yeung-karen.aspx" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Karen Yeung</A> from University of Birmingham. Together the panel will consider the implications of automating the law and automating regulation from US and global perspectives.
This is the first part of two-part reflection on the practical and philosophical aspects of implementing public policy within data-driven environments. Government professionals are often left behind technology trends and the move towards data-driven culture is no different. This event intends to bridge that gap. Following this morning panel, the afternoon workshop “Data Literacy in the Public Sector” is an interactive workshop for government professionals. This program is partially funded by the National Science Foundation.
