About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

The Middle East’s continued success in oil and gas discoveries reflects decades of investment in exploration and technology. As the petroleum sector looks ahead to carbon sequestration and natural hydrogen plays, the mining industry lags behind. This talk explores the key lessons and contrasts between the two sectors, emphasizing how addressing these disparities is crucial to advancing the energy transition and unlocking the full potential of mineral exploration in the region.

Dr. Afifi is a leading geologist at KAUST since 2018. Prior to KAUST, he held technical and leadership roles at USGS and Aramco. He holds advanced geology degrees from KFUPM, Colorado School of Mines, and University of Michigan, complemented with executive training at Harvard. He has received many recognitions for his contributions to geosciences, resource discovery, and mentorship. Driven by a mission to advancing sustainability, he links academia, industry, and future geoscientists.

Organized by

The purpose of the society is to help provide for the technical and professional development of its members in geology, geophysics, and related sciences, especially in the exploration for, and development of, petroleum and mineral resources within the Arabian Peninsula. The society activities include regular monthly meetings, field trips to local and out-of-kingdom locations, technical seminars, special projects and publications. Membership includes subscription to the quarterly geoscience journal "Geo Arabia". The society is also a co-sponsor of the regional "GEO" conferences.Membership of the Dhahran Geoscience Society is open to all Eastern Province geoscientists. The Dhahran Geoscience Society is an affiliated society of AAPG, EAGE & SEG.
