Join us for a panel discussion on the importance of history education for community engagement!

On the occasion of Black History Month, the <a href="https://www.eda.admin.ch/countries/usa/en/home/representations/embassy-washington.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Embassy of Switzerland</a> and the <a href="https://www.columbia-pike.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Columbia Pike Partnership</a> will host a panel discussion with impactful public historians and museum curators from the Washington metropolitan area. The discussion will focus on the importance of public history, innovative curation and museum education as a tool for community engagement. Curious about storytelling as a form of activism and how innovative tools, such as virtual reality, play a role in education? Hear from Dr. Felicia Bell, Senior Advisor at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History; Dr. Scott Taylor, President of the <a href="http://arlingtonblackheritage.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Black Heritage Museum of Arlington</a>, a third-generation native Arlingtonian passionate about preserving his community’s history; and Marvin-Alonzo Greer, a public historian bringing history education to thousands of followers online and to schools across Prince George’s County through the interactive Sankofa Mobile Museum. Tour of the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington and VR Experience from the Sankofa Mobile Museum (3045B Columbia Pike, Arlington, VA 22204)The Black Heritage Museum of Arlington celebrates the continuing journey of the African American residents of Arlington County, VA. The museum illuminates the spirit of resilience of Arlington’s early settlers to its current citizens, highlighting their journey from enslavement to freemen, from refugees to business owners and other pillars of the community, and providing a focal point exhibit on Arlington’s Freedman’s Village and contributions made by its residents and their descendants to local and national history.The Sankofa Mobile Museum is an interactive mobile museum that travels to schools across Prince George’s County to expose students to untold stories and unsung individuals from 10,000 years ago to today – connecting concepts and context to school curriculum and critical thinking. Bridging the past to the present through three separate ‘stops,’ this time traveling trailer provides visitors an immersive and thought-provoking experiences that aim to build knowledge and understanding, inspire curiosity and inquiry and instill belonging and empathy. Through augmented and virtual reality technology, and facilitated dialogues, visitors will analyze significant events, ideas, and themes to identify how individuals and societies have and have not changed over time. Visitors will discuss how choices of the past impact the present and discuss how they can empower a new generation to change the future.Parking is available at the Arlington Career Center and at 901 S. This event is organized in collaboration with <a href="https://www.columbia-pike.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Columbia Pike Partnership</a> and is part of a month long event series celebrating Black History Month at the Embassy of Switzerland. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington and immerse themselves in the Sankofa Mobile Museum's virtual reality experience. The curators will be present to give insight into their work and answer questions. The tours will take place at the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington (3045B Columbia Pike, Arlington, VA 22204)
