Tantric Bellydance - Level 2: Dance of the Seven Veils

The Dance of the Seven Veils is infamous throughout history, often presented as a scandalous dance of desire and manipulation by the magnetic Salome, but it's true meaning and origins are far older and steeped in women's mysteries. In this Level 2 series of Tantric Bellydance classes, we will spiral deeper into embodied movement practices while refining our bellydance technique using the metaphor of the Heroine's Journey and the Descent of Inanna, a 5,000 year old myth of the Queen of Heaven traveling to the underworld to meet her shadow self and then returning to her lands empowered and renewed.

In this class, we will learn the techniques of dancing with a veil to a choreographed piece, focusing on developing musicality, skill and grace while dancing with our feminine magnetism. Each week, we will progress through the choreography for a full length song, as well as practice bellydance drills and a warm up and cool down, along with breathwork and other somatic practices for a wholistic approach. Tantric Bellydance is more than just a dance class, it is an embodied movement practice that brings you back home to your full self! The Dance of the Seven Veils choreography will give you an opportunity to feel into and express your full feminine and play with your sensuality--this dance is fun, flirty, empowering, alluring and will boost your confidence and creativity!

You will need a veil made of chiffon or other floaty material, two yards in length and a standard bolt width of 45 inches—you can order a bellydance veil from online retailers or just go to Hobby Lobby or your favorite fabric shop and purchase 2.5 to 3 yards of fabric hemming is completely optional. Make sure the material is light and airy enough to be floaty, chiffon is recommended, but other fabrics that flow well will also work. Additionally, six silk or silk-like standard sized (24x24”) scarves will be needed to complete the Dance of the Seven Veils, these can be found at thrift stores and don't have to match. You could also buy an additional two yards of chiffon or floaty material to make six 24x24” (approximately) squares, and again, hemming is optional.

As with the Level 1 class, wear clothes that allow freedom of movement and that you feel good in, such as skirts, yoga pants, harem pants, etc. A bellydance belt or hip scarf is recommended and can also be ordered from online retailers such as Amazon. Be sure to bring a water bottle, additional water will be available, and be prepared to dance barefoot or in soft soled shoes such as ballet slippers or other dance shoes.

Prerequisite for this class is completion of the Level 1 Tantric Bellydance or by permission of the Instructor.
