A Special Evening at Maysles | 2017 Oscar Nominee 'Tanna'

Since 1990, African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) has bridged the divide between post-colonial Africa and the American public through the powerful medium of film and video. AFF's unique place in the international arts community is distinguished not only by leadership in festival management, but also by a comprehensive approach to the advocacy of African film and culture. AFF established the New York African Film Festival (NYAFF) in 1993 with Film Society of Lincoln Center. The New York African Film Festival is presented annually by the African Film Festival, Inc. and Film Society of Lincoln Center, in association with Brooklyn Academy of Music. Join us for a special screening of Tanna, the Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film on February 28th!
On Tuesday, February 28th, at 7pm, our special post-Oscars screening of Tanna will take place at Maysles Cinema; followed by an engaging Q&A with Ambassador Robert Van Lierop and Sister Malika Lee Whitney. Join us!
Tanna had its NY Premiere at the 23rd New York African Film Festival. We expect another engaging evening with this stunning film.
About the Film: Tanna is set in the South Pacific where Wawa, a young girl from one of the last traditional tribes, falls in love with her chief’s grandson, Dain. When an inter-tribal war escalates, Wawa is unknowingly betrothed as part of a peace deal. As this true story unfolds matters of the heart, preservation of traditional culture and individual freedom are explored. Tanna is an alluring and beautifully crafted film performed by the people of Yakel in Vanuatu.
Suggested Donation is $10. Tickets will also be available at the door.
