Talking about Reading

This event is organised by the Centre for Language & Communication Science Research at City, University of London, the largest provider of Speech and Language Therapy courses in the UK. The Centre's research groupscarry out research into all aspects of speech, language and communication disorders, as well as typical speech and language, social and clinical linguistics, deafness, dysphagia, and developmental disorders. Key themes include: aphasia, the nature and long term consequences of developmental language disorder, assessment and therapy for developmental and acquired disorders; gesture, deafness and sign language as well as social and clinical linguistics.Our research has influenced clinical and educational practices both in the UK and overseas, and led to new clinical tools (e.g., for early identification of developmental language and social communication disorders; for measuring language acquisition in British Sign Language, for assessment of quality of life and self-report outcomes in adults with aphasia) and new clinical interventions (e.g., to improve vocabulary / word finding, discourse / narrative, working memory, reading and writing).

Do you remember how you learned to read? Reading is something we learn in childhood, and is an important aspect of our lives. While many people enjoy reading a good book, for others reading remains a struggle. Come along to this event and learn more about the psychological processes behind learning to read, and the skills that deaf and hearing children need to read fluently. The event combines talks, activities and interactive displays, and will be of interest to anyone interested in learning how we learn to read, and ways to support children’s reading. Parents and professionals, as well as children and young people are especially welcome.
BSL/English interpreters will be present to ensure full inclusion for all those attending.
