"Tsukinami as a Keyword in Japanese Culture: The Historical Context Cultivated by the Literary Arts of Short Poetic Forms”

LECTURE ABSTRACT

With the expansion of publishing culture in nineteenth-century Japan, the comical variant of waka poetry known as kyōka (‘crazy poems’) expanded to attract devotees across the country. Exploring the cultural significance of this form, this lecture will explore the structure of ren (the associations that provided the foundation of the movement), its everyday pedagogies, publishing practices and collaborative networks.
