Event description

Description

Artist duo María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde welcome you to a first view of the results from their residency at Sliperiet. The project is called Symbiotic Interaction – presenting wearable garments in and through which plants can communicate shifts in the environment to their carrier. Please join us to celebrate the successful completion of this project! Drinks and snacks served.

The project

During the past months María and Alberto have been working on two wearable tech garments continuing on from their previous research Clorofila 3.0. In the Clorofila project small electrical vibrations in plants were measured through sensors and algorithms, and it was discovered that the data changed depending on changes in external environment such as in temperature, distance of objects, atmospheric pressure or light makes a reaction in the plant. In the new project Symbiotic Interaction garments have been constructed to carry tiny plants that can measure and monitor the surroundings, working as an interface for the changes and relating environmental data to the wearer.

About María and Alberto

María Castellanos and Alberto Valverde started their work together in 2009 under the name uh513. Since then they ave been working in a variety of projects where the common thread is the study of the interrelations and intersections between machines and humans. They approach these issues in different mediums such as interactive installations, sound interventions, and multimedia pieces conducting a transversal and interdisciplinary research where technology allows humans to enhance their senses and capabilities.

About the residency programme

The programme is funded by Haakon Svenssons stiftelse. The aim is to enable innovators, artists, makers and researchers to develop their practice with the resources at SoftLab - thereby adding to the existing creative community at Sliperiet.

SoftLab

SoftLab is a prototyping facility at Sliperiet Umeå University specialising in (smart) textiles and wearables. For more information or to book a visit please contact Emma Ewadotter emma.ewadotter@umu.se
