Sustainable Printing Workshop: Anthotypes

A vibrant cultural center, the Alice Austen House keeps the daring spirit of the early American photographer alive by showcasing the life, work, and home of Alice Austen (1866-1952). Come explore late 19th century period rooms, changing exhibitions of Austen’s work and contemporary photography, and relish the lovely waterfront grounds with panoramic views of the New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan.

In this workshop we will create photographic prints with light sensitive paper coated with an emulsion produced from plants.

The follow-up to our Anthotype Emulsion Workshop, in this workshop we will create photographic prints with light sensitive paper coated with emulsion produced from plants.We will be working with a variety pre-coated papers, talk about exposure time and best practices for optimal results. Participants can bring in their own objects to print with or forage within our park. For artists that would like to use their own analog or digital photographs for prints, we will be holding a digital negative workshop from 12-1pm. Anthotype – a photographic and environmentally friendly process of making prints with the photosensitive material of plants
