Join us to discuss the impact of surveillance tech and community efforts to challenge these systems.

Our panel features scholars and community organizers focused on issues of surveillance. Through a panel discussion followed by a Q&amp;A, we will discuss the impact of surveillance technologies, especially on Black and brown communities. We will also explore community activism efforts to challenge harmful surveillance systems in cities.O﻿ur panelists include:<ul><li>Simone Browne, Associate Professor of African and African Diaspora Studies, UT Austin</li><li>Lilly Irani, Associate Professor of Communication, UC San Diego</li><li>Tawana Petty, Director of Policy and Advocacy, Algorithmic Justice League</li><li>Shakeer Rahma, Community Organizer, Stop LAPD Spying Coalition</li></ul>Our co-sponsors include: African and African American Studies Department; Communication Department; Digital Civil Society Lab; Ethics, Society, and Technology Hub; Program in Science, Technology &amp; Society; Sociology Department; Symbolic Systems Program; and Urban Studies Program.This event is hosted by the Technology &amp; Racial Equity Initiative at the Stanford Center for Comparative Studies in Race &amp; Ethnicity (CCSRE). This initiative is working to advance racial justice in the analysis, production, and deployment of new technologies.
