Surf Fishing Clinic at Botany Bay WMA

We are starting so early because of the heat and humidity*

Enjoy a saltwater fishing clinic at Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area (WMA). We will teach you how to tie knots, rig your rod, how to cast, what bait to use, and what fish you can catch! After the instructional part of the clinic, you get a chance to apply these newly-learned skills by fishing! Please note that this is a very remote area as it is a WMA.

Details for the event:

• YOU WILL BE WALKING. THERE IS NO SERVICE VEHICLE.

• Clinic: The instructional part will take place in the open area beside the office/house. I will set up tables, chairs, and tents in the shade. Then we will caravan the short distance to the beach, and walk to the beach front. The walk to the beach front is 0.5 miles from the parking lot. Expect to walk at least 1 mile for the day. We can fish directly in front of the trail at the beach. Rods and reels, bait, and tackle are provided for the duration of the clinic. This is a catch-and-release clinic. You *MUST* have a valid SC saltwater fishing license if you are 16 and older.

• What to bring: Dress is casual. Check the weather report and dress appropriately as you will be outside. Other items to consider bringing include a hat, sunglasses, sunblock, bug spray, beach chair, snacks, and reusable water bottle(s). We will have access to a bathroom at the office. You can have your saltwater fishing license as a screenshot on your phone or have it in your pocket, bag, or wallet.

• Costs: The program is free of charge.

• Weather: This clinic will be held if the weather is good; if it is too windy and/or rainy, we will postpone. There is no permanent shelter to conduct classes so we are at the mercy of the weather.

• Parking: Meet at the office/old house. You'll see a sign that says "Private Employees Only", and you'll make a right down the road to the house. Once you enter into the gates of Botany Bay, please check-in your vehicle in at the front kiosk. Drive down the main road in Botany till you see signs for "Fishing Clinic" with an arrow. Just follow the arrows.
