Event Description:

As part of its services to the community, the North Justice Center has a Court Tour Program made possible by the participation of volunteer docents. This program was started by an organization called the Orange County Lawyers’ Wives and then thereafter expanded to included interested civic-minded community leaders. Their valuable contribution includes recruiting and training new volunteers and guiding court tours for middle, high school, and college students.

The court tour program takes students from the classroom to the courtroom, allowing them to witness first-hand the administration of justice. Participants of the court tour can expect to:

✓ Be able to distinguish between the different levels of crimes, i.e. infraction, a misdemeanor, and felony;

✓ Observe actual court proceedings; (There are 18 courtrooms with varied cases from traffic, misdemeanor, petty theft, domestic violence etc. The court liaison will suggest appropriate cases to observe. We will spend 15-30 minutes here.)

✓ Visit the jury assembly room and learn about the jury system;

✓ Meet representatives from the District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department and Interpreter’s Office and learn how each agency plays an important role in our judicial system; (Each will present for about 15 minutes, total time of about 45 minutes for these presentations in the courtroom.)

✓ Participate in a scripted mock trial with the objective of teaching students the role various participants in a courtroom setting, i.e. judge, attorney, witness, courtroom clerk, bailiff, etc.;

✓ Learn about educational requirements to pursue various careers within the judicial system; and

✓ Meet a judicial officer, as he or she addresses the students about the legal consequences of one’s actions. (If available)

The Mission of the Superior Court of California, County of Orange Serve the public by administering justice and resolving disputes under the law, thereby protecting the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitutions of California and of the United States of America.

This field trip is hosted by Inspire Parent Advocacy Team Field Trip Coordinator Heidi Da Silva and in Homeschool Concierge fashion is open to all homeschoolers.
