Event Details

Sunshine Day 2016 will be in the Keiser Community Room at the SALT Block Foundation in downtown Hickory.

In the morning, North Carolina Open Government Coalition Director Jonathan Jones will lead a public records training session that includes updates on the many new exemptions that the General Assembly put into place in 2015.

The luncheon will include a keynote speech by Charleston Post & Courier Executive Editor Mitch Pugh on his newsroom's use of public records in telling a Pulitzer Prize winning story on domestic violence in South Carolina and the newspaper's efforts to gain access to records in the criminal case of Dylann Roof. We also will be announcing the winners of our second annual Sunshine Awards program.

The afternoon will include a panel on the use of video in police investigations that will feature Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Attorney Mark Newbold and Charlotte Observer reporter Michael Gordon.

Parking will be available in the SALT Block parking lots accessible from 3rd Avenue NE and from 4th Avenue NE. On-street parking will also available on 3rd Avenue NE, and 4th Avenue NE.
