Sunflower Soiree

The Maryland Agricultural Resource Council is organized for the benefit of the citizens of Maryland to enhance the rural economy and to foster conservation of agricultural and natural resources through educational and technical services by:Providing life-long learning opportunities for current and prospective farmers and agribusinesses through seminars, activities, continuing education programs, curriculum-based partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities as well as mentoring opportunities with successful farmers:Supportting rural economic growth in Maryland through agriculture and related fields that is consistent with local and statewide natural resource protection and farmland conservation goals;Promoting citizen understanding of and appreciation for agricultural businesses and their impact on the lives of all people and the environment in which they live with a focus on the Chesapeake Bay watershed: andHelping children and families of diverse backgrounds develop a personal connection to agriculture through tangible, hands-on experiences.

<H2>MARC is planting sunflowers again this year! </H2>
<P>Make plans to come out and celebrate this amazing plant...</P>
<P>The sunflower is native to the America's, and played an integral role in Native American diets and culture. In fact, the sunflower may well have been the first agricultural crop grown in the Americas. But the flower's history doesn't stop there. It was brought over to Europe where it was bred and grown as a commodity crop for oil production. Many people feel that Hitler's decision to invade Russia was to take control of its sunflowers. Today, most all potato chips are fried in sunflower oil. The sunflower has been and continues to be an inspiration for artists as well. Oscar Wilde was often seen wearing a sunflower in his lapel. The flower has become synonymous with Mr. Wilde as well as for the aesthetics movement he led in the late 19th century.</P>

<H3>Note: Due to the wet and rainy spring, the sunflowers were planted late. It is unlikely that the sunflowers will be ready for picking at this event. <BR></H3>

<P>Bring a picnic dinner, blanket, chairs, and a camera.</P>
<P>Children are free. Friendly dogs on leashes are allowed. Buy your tickets beforehand, and save $5. </P>
