Join us for an extraordinary opportunity tailored for young poets! Our Summer Virtual Teen Poetry Intensive invites you to dive deep into your stories, uncover inner wisdom, and transform real-life experiences into powerful poetry. All participants will have the unique opportunity to perform at this year’s NYC Poetry Festival, showcasing the skills and pieces developed during the workshop.


Meet Your Instructor:

Our inaugural Summer Virtual Teen Poetry Intensive is led by the renowned Shanelle Gabriel, a celebrated spoken word poet, singer, and educator from Brooklyn, NY. Known for her dynamic performances on HBO's Def Poetry Jam, Shanelle has shared stages with notable figures like Jill Scott, Nas, Nikki Giovanni, Anderson Paak, and Stacey Abrams. Her poetic journey has taken her to prestigious venues such as the Vatican, the Apollo Theater, Lincoln Center, and SXSW.

Beyond performing, Shanelle has crafted poems for prominent brands including Fast Company Magazine, LifeWtr, and Inc Magazine. She played a pivotal role in national campaigns, such as the Pandora Music campaign featured on the Times Square Jumbotron. As a lupus advocate, Shanelle has graced the cover of USA Today and appeared in Women’s Health magazine and on the Lifetime Network, sharing her ongoing battle with the disease.

Shanelle’s dedication to youth and education is unwavering. With over 18 years of experience as an educator and nonprofit specialist, she conducts workshops on culturally responsive and healing arts-centered practices. Shanelle holds a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Teaching from Teachers College at Columbia University and has guest lectured at NYU, The New School, and Georgia State University.

As a former Executive Director of Urban Word, Shanelle has significantly contributed to youth literacy and development. She is also an esteemed member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, continuing her service to the community in various capacities.
