Debris Free Oceans is a Miami-based 501(c)3 nonprofit with the mission of empowering local communities to go zero-waste so all can have access to clean oceans and a healthy environment. Since its inception in 2014, DFO has engaged over 13K volunteers in picking up over 68K pounds of abandoned material, educated more than 15K students on the plastic pollution crisis and zero-waste solutions, hosted more than 500 zero-waste events, and prevented the use of more than 2M single use plastics through sustainability consulting.

DFO is hosting an epic swap event at Unbranded Brewing Co. on Saturday, July 22nd!

Bring your gently-used clothing, shoes, art, decor, kitchen supplies, books, and even plants to swap! We will sort the items and then you’re free to roam and collect what calls to you! (No ‘one ticket per item’ business, we’re pretty chill!). Grab a beer (the guava is our fav!) as you take part in a collective effort to halt <a href="https://www.earthday.org/campaign/sustainable-fashion/?gclid=CjwKCAjwpuajBhBpEiwA_ZtfhYXFcH-r7V8l83aHcaB5WSzW8P1sa5ZHBvQjh4tTXvXfs1nC7_17WBoCglkQAvD_BwE" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">#fastfashion</a>. The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries, from the energy-intensive production process to each time we wash our clothes and release microplastics into our water streams. Washing our clothes accounts for <a href="https://portals.iucn.org/library/sites/library/files/documents/2017-002-En.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">35% </a>of the microplastics found in the ocean— textiles are the largest known source of marine plastic pollution! Just like plastics production in general, clothing production has doubled since 2000 and <a href="https://www.thebusinessresearchcompany.com/report/fast-fashion-global-market-report" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">continues to skyrocket</a>. One very tangible and important step we can take to slow down this process is to wear what we already have (but we can exchange so it all feels new)! Swaps are a super fun + fashionable way to reinvigorate your wardrobe without contributing to the plastics prob. Come join! Those 21 and under are welcome to attend!
