Summer Teen Fiction Filmmaking Program
Join us for our Summer Intensive Teen Animation Program in Washington D.C.! Get ready to unleash your creativity and learn the art of stop-action motion and 2D drawn and digital animation, including how to make a short film.
Everyone works both individually and in teams on equipment provided by DCIFF. You will also learn how to use easily available online animation tools, set up space to film and produce a final film that everyone has contributed to. This in-person course offers a fantastic opportunity for teens to explore their passion for storytelling through art, drawing, collage and film. You will have a unique chance to meet interesting professionals and see how they work.
Includes:
- Learn essential tools and techniques – flip books and intro to character animation
- Stop Motion and Claymation
- Producing a final short stop motion film
- Equipment: Provided, but if you have a laptop or tablet / pencils and paper for drawing, do bring!
- Requirements: NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! - WE WILL WORK WITH YOU AT YOUR LEVEL. Taking a one week vacation is fine but please do not sign up in you know you will miss a lot of the course. This is not a drop-in experience and you should commit to 4 of the 5 weeks to really benefit. For ages 14-17 (we will accept 13 year old if interested).
Meeting schedule: June 30-Aug 1, Mon to Fri 12.30-5.30pm, in-person. No class July 4th. August 1st afternoon is the public presentation of all the final work. This is not a drop-in program, but we allow for a week away. We ask participants for 75% attendance and we give Certificates of Completion to those who do.
Venue is two blocks from Dupont Circle Metro Station in a safe and secure facility.
Cost: FREE for all the participants after a required, non-returnable $60 (DC residents) / $85 (non DC residents) registration fee to cover incidentals. Once you have signed up here, we will get in touch to have you fill in our form. Once admitted, you will be asked to pay the registration fee to secure your place in the program.
Healthy snacks fee for the whole 5 weeks is $125.

We understand that you may take a week off. We ask for 75% attendance as otherwise you cannot make a good film.
No, you can start from scratch in this class. Usually we have a range of people with different level of experience and everyone learns from each other
We do have snacks provided every day during break time. This is what the registration fee covers.
Our lead teacher is a trained animator who works in the DMV and the assistant teachers work a) in drama and acting and b) in film editing.
Once you sign up here to show interest, we will get in touch with you to make sure that this is a good fit for you and then provide you with the next steps.
We can accommodate some participants who would like to join for a shorter time: either June 24 through July 3rd or July 8th through July 26th . The registration fee says the same for the shorter course.
