Frequently asked questions

I have no experience or knowledge of beekeeping. Is Bee College right for me?

ABSOLUTELY! At every Bee College, we have a wide range of speakers about many topics, including Beekeeping 101, Value Added Products, Pests & Disease, Queens/Swarming, Plants/Pollination, Business of Beekeeping and more. There is something for everyone, including youth!

How do I know what classes or topics to take?

Our brightly colored agendas are coded so that attendees can follow a topic or theme. You may follow a beginner's beekeeping track, for example, or you may wish to explore other types of topics. The choice is yours. There is NO pre-registration for classes and you may attend any session at any time.

What do I need to bring with me for Bee College?

You may wish to bring a notebook, laptop/tablet, or other device to take notes during classes. Additionally, there will be veils and bee suits for you to use in the hands-on apiary classes. However, if you have your own gear, you are welcome to bring and wear that.

What is the UF/IFAS Honey Show?

The hottest ticket in town! We encourage everyone attending Bee College to enter the Honey Show. Whether you submit a jar of honey in the "black jar" category [bring a small jar of honey and you're IN!] or you bake a honey cake, submit honey bee art, lip balm, or mead - you gotta play to win!

What happens at the "Social Bee" event on Friday evening?

The social is a chance to "rub antennae" with fellow Bee College attendees, chat with speakers, make new-bee friends, win door prizes, and hear about the Honey Show winners! We will have food and FUN - all are welcome to join!

What happens if there is bad weather?

While most of our classes are held indoors, our apiary classes are out in the bee yard and are weather-dependent. Light rain will not cancel, but heavy rain or thunderstorms will. Prepare to dress in layers - and be flexible!

What are the food offerings during Bee College?

We will provide light breakfast refreshments during registration and drinks (coffee, tea, water) the rest of the days. Lunch both days may be pre-ordered - or you may pack your own or dine out anywhere nearby.

Is Bee College ADA Accessible?

YES! The University of Florida is committed to providing universal access to all of our events. To arrange disability accommodations, please contact us at honeybee@ifas.ufl.edu or call 352-294-6927 at least 1 week in advance. We are proud to be an Equal Opportunity Institution.
