About this event

It's halfway through the year ... how's your reading goal going ? Summer is always the perfect time to sit down in the sun with a good book. Why not track your reading and enjoy some good books with your fellow book hoes ?

Come celebrate your love for reading with a good old-fashioned readathon ! You can track your reading every day in minutes and pages to complete, or to just see how much you can read. Though this is a "competition" and you can push yourself to read more than you may normally, this is also just a chance to connect with your fellow readers and celebrate the literary community. Never feel pressured to read a great amount, or go crazy with your reading. The hope for this month is to enjoy some nice weather while sitting, reading, and relaxing. Throughout the readathon month, you'll also have access to a special readathon Geneva group chat with all other book hoes participating in the readathon. You can set up reading meetups and get some great recs from one another throughout the month.

HOW THE READATHON WORKS:

Every day you will fill out a Google Form where you track the amount of time you've spent reading and the number of pages you've read.

All reading materials are valid for this readathon. Any time you spend reading, record it. Any pages you read, keep track. In regards to audiobooks, the goal for this readathon is to set aside time for reading and relax into a good book. Audiobooks can only count towards 'time read' if you are physically setting aside time to sit, listen, and engage with the book. Audiobooks do not count towards pages number tracking. Listening to an audiobook throughout the day while working or multitasking does not count. This has worked well for past readathons and we will continue to implement this rule going forward.

PLEASE NOTE: THE READATHON WILL START ON JUNE 1ST. THE FINAL CELEBRATION PARTY WILL BE AT VERLAINE BAR IN THE LOWER EAST SIDE ON MONDAY, JULY 1ST AT 7PM.

There will be two winners for this readathon - the most time read and the most pages read. All participants will receive the tracking form on May 30th with instructions on how to use it. You will need to save this link and fill it out every day. The readathon will officially start on June 1st so please do not track any reading prior to that. If you miss a day of tracking, no worries ! Just add the amount to the next day's tally and submit it all in one form.

Organized by

The Book Club for Book Hoes was established in July 2022 with our first book club meeting in August 2022 in Central Park. What started as a fun side-hobby has now turned into a full-time job and organization for creator and organizer Zoë Mahler, who runs five book clubs in-person each month and has now expanded to one book club virtually. We host literary and bookish-themed events monthly. To stay connected and get more info you can find the book hoes on Instagram, TikTok, Eventbrite, and Substack. The Book Hoes Podcast is also available on all platforms you like to listen including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Below you can find information about all the book clubs we offer.

Book Hoes Who Brunch Book Club meets on the first Saturday of the month. We meet at a café in Bushwick and discuss any book that comes our way. There is no theme for this book club, other than to accommodate those of us book hoes who are morning people and love a good coffee. We focus mostly on generalized fiction, but have strayed a bit into thrillers, fantasy, and queer literature in the past. This book club is open and inclusive to all book hoes.

Femmes Book Club meets on the first Sunday of the month. We read books with badass femme protagonists and meet in a bar in Union Square (near The Strand). We read books in any genre, but we primarily stick to general fiction and contemporary literature. This book club is open to all femmes and femme-presenting readers in their 20s and 30s.

Murder, They Read Book Club meets the first Monday of the month on the Lower East Side. We read all things spooky - murder mysteries, thrillers, a little bit of horror, and general mysteries. This book club is open and inclusive to all book hoes.

Romance Book Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at a romance bookstore in Park Slope. We read all romances of all kinds. Generally, all parties of the romance books we read are human (I know monster romance is big these days but we haven't gotten that creative yet). This book club is open and inclusive to all book hoes.

Prose & Hoes Book Club meets on the first Thursday of the month at a bookstore on the Upper West Side. Don't let this name fool you, as this book club has evolved from reading prose to reading mostly all fantasy and YA literature interspersed with some other genres here and there. This book club is open and inclusive to all book hoes.

BOOK CLUB FROM BED is our virtual book club. We meet (virtually) on the third Sunday of the month at 8:30pm EST. This book club gets to vote for the books they read and a poll goes out at the end of every month to vote for the upcoming book. There is no specific guidelines for what we read, and we have read lots of different genres and books in the past. We have book hoes joining us from all over the world and our book club is structured virtually as a conversation and follow-up games and chance to chat as a group.

Once you attend book club, you'll receive a follow-up email following your in-person book club (or virtual) that will provide you with a link to our internal Geneva app group chat. Geneva is very similar to Discord, but a bit more user-friendly. This Book Hoes group chat will provide you with an opportunity to connect with your fellow book hoes in between book clubs. There is a main group chat, a community board, and group chats for each book club. Tickets go on sale in the Geneva group chat an hour prior to going on sale to the public.

As for our events, we try to have at least one or two events a month depending on venue availability. In the past, we have hosted book exchanges, happy hours, trivia nights, silent reading nights, read-a-thons, and many more. Our members are primarily women in their 20s and 30s, but we are welcoming to any and all readers who wish to connect and have a good time. Must be 21+ to attend.
