About this event

You are joyfully invited to Sukkot on 6 Oct 2023. Sukkot is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the end of the harvest by building a temporary hut outside where meals can take place. From 17:00-23:00, we welcome you to this special event created in collaboration with Justine Jaz Okolodkoff, Lara Bongard, and Michelle Woods. At the event, there will be a conceptual dinner, a queer film screening program, collective decorations, and a Lulav & etrog inspired cocktail. In the garden of Morpho, a special sukkah pavilion has been designed in collaboration with architect Oleg Asoiev. There we will gather and relax under the stars.

Biographies:

Justine Jaz Okolodkoff is a documentary film director, programmer and facilitator. Queer expressions, bodily autonomy and identity narratives are at the core of their work. Their aim is to create artistic and collective spaces that support complex, joyful and poetic politics. They have already participated in various projects such as: Les Mains Gauches - queer feminist short film festival (Marseille, France), Otro modo de ser - festival de PoetAs (Barcelona, Spain), Women’s Forum (Paris, France), Backlash Lit (digital spaces), Inqueeries (London, UK)

Lara Bongard (1995, Apeldoorn) is an artist who’s multidisciplinary practice moves between creative writing, cooking, photography and textile design. Her work illuminates hidden stories of cultural erasure and ‘placeless’ migratory identities. Exploring the feeling of belonging nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Via transhistorical research—working with archives, historical sources, ancestral stories, mythology and tales—she merges and fuses ancient narratives and symbolisms to create new stories, images and rituals. Her work aims to challenge our relationship to the past and acknowledge the multiplicity of stories and histories that constitute our identities. Lara holds a BA and MA in Visual Arts from LUCA School of Arts, Belgium. Lara is a contributing writer at METAL and MOLD magazine.

Michelle Woods is a cook and co-founder of Table Dance; what used to be a restaurant and event space in Antwerp is now a food and performance collective. Michelle currently holds a position at Morpho and works with each of the development residents individually. Following the residents’ chosen path of research, together they cook and host small dinners for their fellows and chosen guests.

Oleg Asoiev (1990, Kyiv) is an architect based in Antwerp. His work revolves around the concept of the Transitional Urban Condition, where he explores the by-products of city transformation. Oleg's perspective seeks to uncover the delicate balance between the unplanned and designed aspects of the urban environment, especially focusing on the threshold between non-pedigreed and pedigreed architecture. Having graduated from KU Leuven he has since collaborated with architectural practices in the Netherlands, Lithuania, and Ukraine. Currently, he is deeply engaged in collaborative interdisciplinary projects alongside his work with META architectuurbureau.

David Bernstein (1988, San Antonio, Texas) is an artist who combines performance, sculpture, and writing to tell stories through objects. His projects deal with a range of subjects: psychology, wellness, fetishism, and spirituality. David is a Judeo-Futurist who reclaims rituals, objects, and symbols from the past in order to rethink them and queer them. Next to his individual practice, he collaborates with a variety of people and participates in building community at Shabbes 24/7 (Belgian Jewish diasporist queer collective) and at Level Five (Brussels atelier cooperative). He is currently a resident at Morpho, Antwerp and preparing an upcoming exhibition at Extra City for December 2023.
