Studio Open House: Create & Take

The Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation is a Cleveland, Ohio non-profit art center dedicated to the production and preservation of hand papermaking and the art of the book.The Morgan Conservatory was conceived in 2005 by Tom Balbo and entrepreneur Charles Morgan. In 2007, the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory and Educational Foundation was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) and a former auto parts machine plant on the edge of Cleveland’s Midtown and Hough neighborhoods was leased. The 15,000 square foot plant was transformed into an art facility with studios; an 85' double-wall gallery; and space for community events. In the back on the property, a unique Kozo garden was planted to grow fiber to be processed into handmade papers.Today, approximately 50 workshops are scheduled yearly and utilized by over 200 developing and practicing artists. Year-round intern programs attract participants nation-wide, an Artist-in-Residence program now provides 14 artist with access to studio equipment and housing stipends, and the Morgan provides educational programs for K-12 students, seniors, and neighborhoods. Programming for the gallery continues to expand including an annual juried show, artist showcases, and promotional exhibitions.The Sam Caraboolad garden in the rear of the Morgan’s studio space allows the entire papermaking process to be experienced and is the largest Kozo garden in the country. Kozo, a type of Mulberry Tree from Japan, is the base of Eastern Kozo paper, but the garden also houses milkweed, hosta, and other native plants that are either processed into paper or embedded into handmade paper.

Are you curious about paper arts? Are you interested in building your skills and using our studios? Have you considered taking one of our workshops but felt too inexperienced? Join us for our Studio Open House and we’ll help you break the ice! During our Studio Open House you can experience the basics of papermaking, wood block printing, paper marbling, and indigo dyeing in one day and walk away with your own artwork. Join <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/PraxisFiberWorkshop/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Praxis Fiber Workshop</A> in using their naturally grown indigo to dye a banner that will hang downtown as part of the citywide 'Waterways to Waterways' Event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River Burning. Participants will dye two squares of cotton fabric, one for our banner and one to take home. We're excited to collaborate with <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/ClevelandSeedBank/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cleveland Seed Bank</A>! They will be on sight talking about pollinators with their custom built "milkweed machine" used to separate the seed from the floss. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own milkweed floss seed paper just in time for planting season. Reserve your presale ticket via Eventbrite. Admission is free for members and those 18 & under. $10 suggested donation for nonmembers. Cash and cards will be also accepted at the door.
All ages and skill levels are welcome! *Become a member at the Open House and have your $10 entry fee applied to the cost of a membership.
