Structural Expressionism

Structural Expressionism

Overview

Join us for the opening reception for "Structural Expressionism".

Arthur Gutkin’s work explores the relationship between structure and emotion, between a surface's physical presence and the invisible forces that shape human experience. Through his exhibit titled “Structural Expressionism”, Mr. Gutkin seeks to move painting beyond two-dimensional imagery, allowing lines, textures, mass, and gestures to become the essential building blocks of a visual language.

His artistic journey has continued to expand from impasto landscapes to more defined works that are accented by raw, architectonic abstractions and dense structural masterworks. Throughout this evolution, his interest seems to have remained constant, bridging the gap between drawing, sculpting, and painting.

Working primarily with heavy-body acrylics, pumice gels, embedded materials, and incised lines, Mr. Gutkin constructs paintings that demand a physical presence. The surface becomes both a record of the act of making and a structure in its own right. Layers accumulate, lines cut through and connect forms, and the weight of the material creates a sense of compression, resistance, and movement. These works are not simply images applied to canvas; they are built through a process of addition, subtraction, and transformation.

The exhibit is divided into a three-stage journey that explores Mr. Gutkin’s artistic journey. The exhibit will be featuring earlier works highlighting the artist’s foundational mastery of heavy paint application, color modeling, and atmospheric weight. This stage of the exhibit will segue into a transitional section revealing the exact moments where geometric containments began to feature and yield continuous, organic lines and emerging tendrils. The exhibit’s culmination will feature Gutkin’s seminal multi-figure compositions alongside monumental central sphere canvases. These works display rigid containment that collapses into dense, high-relief orbits of compressed mass and pulsating emotional energy.
