About this event

STRONGROOM is pleased to present (waves), an immersive, choral performance by Audra Wolowiec. The event will take place aboard the Estuary Steward, a passenger boat crossing the Hudson River between Newburgh and Beacon. There will be four crossings: Thursday July 18th, at 7 and 8pm, and Saturday July 20th, at 7 and 8pm. The boat will leave from the dock located at 2 Washington Street, Newburgh, NY 12550.

Audra Wolowiec is an interdisciplinary artist whose work oscillates between installation, print, sculpture, and performance with an emphasis on sound and the material qualities of language. For (waves), an ensemble will vocally perform a sound score composed from distillations of words and utterances from several texts, including “The Waves” by Virginia Woolf, and “Discourse of Bodies in Water” by Galileo, to form an aqueous chorus. Chosen words will be presented in three dimensions, cast in ice and released into the river, to further merge language with water. The Hudson River as a site will be expressed through breath and cadence, conjuring the history of passage, and our complex, embodied relationship with water.

The score will be interpreted through the voices of five performers:

Davi Cohen

Chris DiMeglio

Young Sun Han

Kyoko Kitamura

Clae Rountree

Costume designs by Rujuta Rao. Casting consultation by Young Sun Han. Production consulting by Kylie Lockwood.

Audience members will receive a print with the score by Audra Wolowiec.

Seating is extremely limited - if you cannot make the performance after reserving please contact the host as soon as possible so the seat can be made available to someone else.

Please note the performances will be filmed.

Parking is available at the waterfront. If you are coming from NYC you can take the Metro North Hudson line to Beacon and take a cab/uber over the bridge (about a 15 minute ride). On Thursday evening the Newburgh-Beacon ferry also runs for rush hour trains, the schedule is available here: https://new.mta.info/document/123581. Please note there is no ferry service on the weekends between Newburgh and Beacon.

(waves) by Audra Wolowiec is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Special thanks to the Bannerman Island Trust.
