Deficits in postural and balance control lead to instability, falls, injuries and diminished quality of living. After a stroke, this is a major problem. Therefore, assessment and intervention approaches to enhance balance function, restore mobility, and prevent falls are a major focus of physical therapy practice. This course will provide a review of recent advances in the understanding of balance control that have led to new concepts for developing assessment and intervention approaches including 1) emphasis on protective stepping strategies, 2) evaluating directional vulnerability to balance loss, and 3) the effectiveness of external perturbation training compared to voluntary movement training.

Course objectives:

1. Identify major risk factors that contribute to falls.

2. Evaluate outcome measures that examine the recovery of balance: static, volitional and reactive.

3. Discuss current and novel training approaches to improve balance control and reduce falls in chronic stroke.
