String Quartet + Short Scientific Talks
An elephant researcher and a clinical psychologist give talks about relational dynamics with specially chosen music by Wave string quartet
In our first gathering of 2023, Wave Chamber Collective invites two more scientific thinkers to the stage with us, this time to exploring relational dynamics. We wanted to refocus the collective lens from romantic dynamics to other kinds of relationships. Join Justine Leichtling as she explores our relationship with ourselves and Patrick Freeman as he shares his groundbreaking research on unexpectedly nurturing relationships between male elephants in the wild. As always, our skilled and empathetic Collective musicians will be choosing pieces to highlight the tone and themes of the evening.
The evening will be taking place in a new space for our group (although not new for many of the musicians) at Monument in SOMA! Monument is a live/work/event space in San Francisco that connects and supports creative people across different fields - you can read more about them here.

Our Collaborators
Justine Leichtling, Psy.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in San Francisco. She workswith adults grappling with a variety of problems including depression, anxiety, and trauma. Growing up playing the violin, she developed a deep love for music and the shared emotional experiences that music can create. In her current work, Dr. Leichtling relies on her musical “ear” to listen beyond her patients’ words to the emotional undercurrents of their experiences. She isparticularly interested in human relational dynamics and the way that internalized relational models impact feelings and behavior. Dr. Leichtling also composes music and studies the relationship between a particular dog owner (herself) and a lovable, slightly anxiously attached Aussiedoodle named Chester.
Patrick Freeman is a conservation scientist with a particular passion for pachyderms. While his day job now mostly consists of using statistics and maps to guide habitat conservation, he also maintains a separate career as an elephant researcher where he focuses on the often-underappreciated intricacies of male elephant societies. He uses a combination of long-term behavioral observations and statistics to explore topics ranging from friendship and bond formation to potential rituals related to aggression and conflict resolution as males navigate their relationships around a water hole in Namibia. Patrick is also a photographer and uses this medium along with his writing to inspire others to love elephants as much as he does, advocate for their conservation, and reflect on how much they can teach us about our own lives.

We are a new, musician-run collective currently running at a deficit through the generosity of musicians who believe classical music isn't just for the concert hall and that new performances like this should exist in San Francisco. Thank you for attending and thank you for considering supporting!
