About this event

9:00 am: David Billingsley, City of Roanoke Commonwealth Attorney’s Office – Review of current law, and evidence needed to prove suffocation and/or strangulation from a prosecutor’s perception, including when victims themselves may not be credible.

10:00 am - 12:00 pm: Melissa Harper, Forensic Nurse Examiner, Ultra Health and SAFE Center of SWVA– Review of forensic and medical aspects of strangulation/suffocation, new trace evidence kits, tool-screening(s), and how to serve special populations, as it relates to strangulation and suffocation and those also suffering a sexual assault.

12:00 - 12:15 pm: Get Lunch and be seated to continue training.

12:15 - 1:15 pm: Frank Leftwich, Criminal Investigator, City of Roanoke Police Department – Gathering of evidence, interviewing victims, investigation techniques, credibility, court challenges and trauma of the trial.

1:15 - 2:00 pm: Stacey Sheppard, Director of Housing and Human Services, TAP – Victim service(s), resources, advocacy and sheltering obstacles.

The Roanoke Valley Violence Prevention Council, formerly the Family Violence Coordinating Council is a standing committee of the Council of Community Services. The RVVPC is an interagency coalition of professionals that include human service agencies, attorneys, legal aid, police officers, and health care providers. The members work together to increase the resources available to deal with family violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking

The RVVPC’s mission is to engage professionals in a collaborative and comprehensive response to family violence, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking and to empower our community by raising awareness of these issues and the resources available.
