Stephen Kent

A pioneer and global leader in playing the Australian Aboriginal didgeridoo in contemporary music around the world, Stephen Kent has performed and recorded for decades across multiple genres both as a renowned solo artist and in collaborations with a multitude of world-class musicians including, Airto Moreira (Brazil), Zakir Hussain (India), Omar Sosa (Cuba) Rahim El Haj (Iraq), Leonard Eto (Japan), Chirgilchin (Tuva), Michel Portal (France), R.Carlos Nakai, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Glen Velez (USA) and many more.


In 2006 he premiered noted Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe’s 16th String Quartet at San Francisco’s Other Minds Festival with the Del Sol Quartet and also performed the work at The Library of Congress, continuing to tour and record with Del Sol and, latterly playing Sculthorpe with the Oregon-based Delgani Quartet. He has amassed a catalog of over 30 album recordings of original music, including 7 solo works and multiple recordings with his group projects, Trance Mission, Lights in a Fat City, Baraka Moon and others. Stephen is an educator and teacher of the didgeridoo in a contemporary context, whilst being a committed advocate of its’ indigenous origins. He also teaches didgeridoo to people suffering from breathing issues such as sleep apnea.


For 26 years he hosted and produced “Music of the World” on the Pacifica Radio Network’s KPFA in Northern California. Stephen Kent was born in England, raised in Uganda and the UK and has also spent periods of his life living and working in Australia, Spain and Hawaii. The San Francisco Bay Area has been his home base for many years.
