STEAMing Sustainability: Making a Difference

This series will bring a different special guest on each available date.

The STEAM and Sustainability Initiative at the Office of the Provost has created a new interdisciplinary teaching and learning program in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) where the arts and humanities meet with STEM. The program focuses on equitable and inclusive practices and uses a learner-centered model to prepare students to meet the demands of the 21st century workforce. The STEAMing Sustainability webinar series will bring in national leaders and provide opportunities for faculty, staff, and administrators to engage in meaningful and collaborative conversations about practices and teaching strategies in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) that positively impact student retention, persistence, and success.

<h3>Speakers Bio</h3><h3></h3>Talitha WashingtonDr. Talitha Washington is the Director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative, a Professor of Mathematics at Clark Atlanta University, and the President-Elect of the Association for Women in Mathematics. As Director, she oversees and provides strategic direction of data science across Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College to increase the number of African Americans with expertise in data science. Most recently, Dr. Washington was a Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the Convergence Accelerator and was instrumental in building and establishing NSF&#x27;s first HSI Program. She is the recipient of the 2019 BEYA STEM Innovator Award, the 2019 Outstanding Faculty Award from Howard University, and the 2020 NSF Director&#x27;s Award for Superior Accomplishment. She is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and the Association for Women in Mathematics. Dr. Leland HartwellDr. Hartwell received the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on defining the cell cycle. Dr. Hartwell is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Other honors include the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Award in cancer research, and the Genetics Society Medal of Honor. Dr. Hartwell led a research team at the Department of Genetics, University of Washington using cell biology and genetics to investigate how yeast cells divide. He was President and Director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He advised the National Cancer Institute in the creation of a proteomics program and organized an international cancer proteomics consortium that was devoted to the early detection of cancer. He is the Center Director and Professor at ASU’s Bio-design Institute. At ASU, he has appointments in the Schools of Education, Biomedical Engineering, and Sustainability and leads the creation of a course on Sustainable Science. He is a Distinguished Faculty at Chang Gung University and Hospital system in Taiwan where he advises a Biosignatures Program seeking to discover biomarkers in oral cancer, colon cancer and other diseases and to implement wearable devices in clinical management.Prof. James HewlettProfessor Hewlett is the Executive Director/Principal Investigator for the Community College Undergraduate Research Initiative (ccuri.us). CCURI is providing resources in undergraduate research to 44 institutional partners nationwide including introductory workshops/conferences that are building regional and national collaborations, start-up supplies and a wide variety of faculty development opportunities. Professor Hewlett is also the Co-PI for InnovATE BIO, the NSF Advanced Technological Education National Center for Biotechnology Education. Professor Hewlett currently serves as the Director of Biotechnology/ Biomanufacturing at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, NY. Professor Hewlett serves on the Editorial Board of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science and the Editorial Board of The American Society of Cell Biology’s CBE Life Sciences Education journal. He serves on the Advisory Board for Rochester Institute of Technology’s Center for Bioscience Education and Technology (CBET) and is a member of the Steering Committee for the University of Georgia’s RCN-UBE Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences Network (CUREnet).This webinar series has been approved for 3.0 hours FPG hours.
