Due to a lack of continuous spaces for everyday Black people to experience the work of Black independent filmmakers, The Luminal Theater provides ongoing, fully-curated access to exhibitions of diverse cinema and media of the Black/African diaspora.  Our screenings doubly allow the artists to present their work within our unique brand of shared audience experiences that embody and emphasize local flavors, while infused with a bold Brooklyn direction.

Screened in partnership with Atlanta&#x27;s Diaspora Cultural Curators to close out Caribbean-American Heritage Month, please join us for this pay-what-you-wish screening of STATELESS, a documentary that reveals the complex history and present-day politics of racial hatred and institutionalized oppression that divides Haiti and the Dominican Republic. We are delighted to be able to screen STATELESS in advance of it&#x27;s premiere on PBS&#x27; PoV later this summer. This screening is also made possible by the Georgia Caribbean American Heritage Coalition, the Caribbean American Cultural Arts Foundation, and Women Make Movies.STATELESS will be on view Friday, June 25th - Saturday, July 3rd. STATELESS director Michèle Stephenson, main subject Rosa Iris Diendomi, and fellow Dominican-Haitian community activists will join us for a post-screening talkback + Q&amp;A on Sunday, June 27th at 6:00 pm EST. SynopsisIn 1937, tens of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent were exterminated by the Dominican army, based on anti-black hatred fomented by the Dominican government. Fast-forward to 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court stripped the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents, retroactive to 1929. The ruling rendered more than 200,000 people stateless, without nationality, identity, or a homeland. In this dangerous climate, a young attorney named Rosa Iris mounts a grassroots campaign, challenging electoral corruption and advocating for social justice. Director Michèle Stephenson’s new documentary Stateless traces the complex tributaries of history and present-day politics, as state-sanctioned racism seeps into mundane offices, living room meetings, and street protests.Filmed with a chiaroscuro effect and richly imbued with elements of magical realism, Stateless combines gritty hidden-camera footage with the legend of a young woman fleeing brutal violence to flip the narrative axis, revealing the depths of institutionalized oppression.
