Stars Under the Microscope

Carnegie Observatories scientists have transformed humankind’s understanding of the Cosmos, from the revelation of the Universe’s expansion to the discovery of dark energy—and the groundbreaking work continues today. Carnegie scientists are still at the vanguard of astronomical research at the world-famous Las Campanas Observatory in Chile, home of the twin 6.5m Magellan telescopes and future site of the 24m Giant Magellan Telescope.

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><STRONG>STARS UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: ANCIENT STARDUST IN METEORITES</STRONG></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><SPAN>Some meteorites contain rare, tiny grains of dust that formed in the explosions of ancient stars and became part of the gas and dust cloud that formed our Solar System.  Dr. Nittler will discuss how he uses microscopic analyses to understand what these “presolar” stellar fossils tell us about the evolution and inner workings of stars, and the chemical history of the matter that became the Sun and planets.</SPAN></P>

<P CLASS="MsoNormal"><STRONG>To accommodate more guests for this popular series, the lecture in Rothenberg Hall will also be simulcast in an adjacent space, Haaga Hall. Seating is first-come, first-served. Rothenberg Hall will be filled first, followed by Haaga Hall. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Audiences in both venues will have the opportunity to participate in the Q&A at the end of the lecture.</STRONG></P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal">The Carnegie Observatories is proud to partner with The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens for the 16th season of the Carnegie Astronomy Lecture Series. The season includes four talks by Carnegie astronomers from the Observatories and <SPAN>from one of our sister departments</SPAN> on the East Coast. The Lectures are designed to share the excitement of current astronomical research with science enthusiasts from the general public. Please join us for the 2019 series in this beautiful venue.</P>
<P CLASS="MsoNormal">Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Lecture will be preceded by a brief musical performance by students from The Colburn School.
