About this event

PROGRAM

Organists may play more full recitals on Stan's Music Parlor organ than on any other CA pipe organ! How and why has this happened?

Dr. Harris describes the organ's development from its original 1998 installation as a digital Johannus Sweelinck 30, to the addition of the BachMen/Rosales pipe organ and more than 150 Hauptwerk virtual pipe organs.

Music representing 16th through 21st century compositions and international styles displays the organ's vast tonal resources.

Following the organ's demonstration, audience keyboard musicians will be invited to play some favorite music on various combinations of the organ's digital, pipe and virtual instruments!

BIOGRAPHY

Stan began violin lessons at age 3 with Grace Nicola in Columbus, Ohio; commenced public performances at age 4; and by age 11, won First and Grand Prizes at the Columbus and Worthington SDA Church talent shows. He began studying piano at age 9 and organ at age 13. As a Mount Vernon Academy student, he served as Chapel Organist, string teacher, soloist, and chamber musician, and graduated as Valedictorian. He won a music scholarship to Andrews University in Michigan and earned a BA with Honors in organ and violin by studying with Drs. C. Warren Becker and Leroy Peterson.

Stan has served as an assistant organist at the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist Church and a Baptist Church in Columbus, OH; at the University Seventh-day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, CA; and at the Second Church of Christ, Scientist of Los Angeles. He played violin and viola as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. In 1988, his left hand was disabled by an injury that ended his professional music performance career. He has continued to play some music for private occasions, and churches, including 6 organ recitals at the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.

For 46 years, Stan has hosted "Stan’s Music Parlor", a private chamber music series for musicians to share music with friends and family. More than 250 musicians have participated. About 1000 guests each year enjoy music and receptions with the musicians. Stan’s Music Parlor is furnished with a Steinway B grand piano and a Johannus SW-30 hybrid digital and pipe organ featuring more than 150 Hauptwerk virtual pipe organs.

The American Psychiatric Association granted Stanley Harris, MD, Distinguished Life Fellowship, its highest honor. Dr. Harris retired in 2021 after 36 years as University Psychiatrist and Clinical Professor at the University of Southern California where he continues voluntary service as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry.

In 1998, a Johannus Sweelinck-30 3 manual, 58 voice, 77 “rank” digital organ from Holland was installed in the Music Parlor. The organ simulates two styles of pipe organs--18th century baroque and 19th century romantic.

A Toshiba Tecra 730XCDT notebook computer with Johannus Intonat software creates more styles of Johannus organs. Cubase and Cakewalk software record and play midi sequences to create “player organ” performances.

A Johannus Classic Sound Module CSM-128 adds 48 sampled orchestral and organ voices, and a Roland JV-1010 Synthesizer Module generates more than 1000 additional sounds. Johannus Digital Stereo Acoustic DSA-4 adds acoustic effects to the Music Parlor.

In 2010, Rosales Organ Builders redesigned and installed a 2 rank (8' Gedeckt and 4' Principal) 1984 BachMen OrganCrafters pipe organ. Artisan Instruments built a computerized midi interface between the console and pipework that enables an organist to play up to 30 stops. Manuel Rosales voiced and tuned the 144 pipes.

The Johannus organ console connects via an M-Audio 410 Firewire midi/audio interface to Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ and Native Instruments Kontakt Player 7 software that uses an HP Pavilion Elite i7, 24 GB RAM computer with over 150 sample sets of virtual pipe organs and keyboard instruments on its 7.5 TB hard drives.

Organists select a Hauptwerk or Native Instruments virtual instrument, a Johannus digital organ, a Roland sound, and/or the BachMen/Rosales pipe organ to play independently or in combination.

The organ's audio system includes 22 amplifiers, 8 sub-woofers, and over 100 music parlor, dining room, and stairwell speakers to create music in various acoustic environments. Johannus and Hauptwerk organs use 16 channels for 3D divisional audio imaging, and 4 channels each for surround acoustic enhancement.
