The Stanford CHIPAO (Communication Health Interactive for Parents of Adolescents and Others) program was founded in 2015 by Dr. Rona Hu and select members of Stanford Medicine. Dr. Hu is a clinical professor at Stanford Medicine and the expert mental health consultant on the hit Netflix drama series “13 Reasons Why.” The Stanford CHIPAO program was developed following two clusters (3 or more suicides in a close time frame) of suicides that happened in the Palo Alto Unified School District from 2009 to 2015. An investigative workgroup composed of members from the United States’ CDC and SAMHSA reported that adolescents in Palo Alto experienced intense pressure from schools, parents, and peers to achieve personal and academic success which significantly impacted their mental health. Families also identified stigma against mental health as a significant barrier to open communication about mental health between family members and accessing mental health.
Stanford CHIPAO uses theatrical vignettes to reduce mental health stigma in Asian communities and strengthen parent-child communication. Topics of the vignettes focus on real-life scenarios and conflicts between parents and teens. Each vignette consists of three parts. In “Version 1.0,” actors depict an escalating conflict between the teen and parent. The performance is then paused for discussion and facilitated by a moderator. Following moderation, actors proceed to an improved “Version 2.0” by using a different set of tools to navigate the conflict depicted in Version 1.0.
