Event Details

The SFST Instructor Development Course is a comprehensive instructor course. This five-day course is designed to impart the student-instructor with the knowledge and skills for instructing the SFST Course. The course concentrates on effective general teaching skills then incorporates the SFST curriculum. The 40 hours of classroom training include, but are not limited to, the following subjects:

  • ​Concepts of Adult Learning and Teaching

  • Teaching Techniques

  • Basic Public Speaking

  • Effective Classroom Presentations

  • Standardzied Field Sobriety Testing Curriculum

  • Drugs That Impair Driving Curriculum

  • Managing a Live Alcohol Workshop

  • Student Instructor Presentations of SFST Curriculum Sessions

Dates and Attendance:


Course Dates:
Monday, August 17 through Friday, August 21, 2020. This class is full.
Monday, September 28 through Friday October 2, 2020 (Rescheduled from April 2020). This class is full.
Monday, April 5 through Friday, April 9, 2021. (Registration will open on or around August 1, 2020. 

Start Date: Monday hours are 1:00 pm to 10:00 pm to accomodate Alcohol Workshop with Proficiency Exam.

Remaining training dates (Tuesday through Friday) from 8:30 to 5:00 pm

Registering for the date listed will enroll you for the full five day course.

Lodging is provided for those traveling more than 50 miles between days of the course.


 Students should be selected from your agency who are specifically assigned to combating the impaired driver.  Students are required to have previous training in SFSTs consistent with NHTSA standards. Additionally, students should possess a high level of proficiency and an active interest in instructing other officers in becoming proficient in the application of SFSTs. Students must have completed the Basic Standardized Field Sobriety Course prior to be able to attend the instructor course. A proficiency perfomance exam will be administered on Monday of the course.

Indiana Criminal Justice Institute

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) is the State planning agency for criminal justice, juvenile justice, traffic safety and victim services. ICJI is designated as the State Administering Agency for distribution of federal funds, and as the State Statistical Analysis Center for research.

Further, ICJI is responsible for coordinating and collaborating with local, state and federal entities to identify, assess, plan, resource and evaluate new and emerging issues facing the criminal justice and public safety spectrum. ICJI works with local, state, and federal entities to evaluate programs associated with: prevention, detection & solution of crimes; law enforcement and criminal/juvenile justice, in an effort to improve and coordinate all aspects of law enforcement and criminal/juvenile justice.

In addition, ICJI works to develop new methods for the prevention & reduction of crime, while stimulating research & compiling and analyzing information/data for dissemination to decision makers.
