St. John Paul II's The Jeweler's Shop

About the Play:

The Jeweler’s Shop is a meditation on marriage by the future Saint John Paul II, told with warmth and wit through the stories of three couples: a young couple torn by war, an older couple tempted by infidelity, and lastly the children of these two marriages who themselves are called to love. The acts focusing on each couple are tied together by encounters with the Jeweler, whose store seems supernaturally attuned to the truth of marriage.

Karol Wojtyła (John Paul II) was long interested in theater. As a student of literature, then priest, bishop, and archbishop, he acted, directed, and authored six plays. As a bishop, he wrote The Jeweler's Shop in 1960. He spent many days ministering to young adults and even taking them on hiking and wilderness adventures.Through this time, he saw the heart of young adults and gained insight into human love. This insight is revealed in The Jeweler's Shop as explores the joys and the pains of love and marriage.

About the Cast & Crew:

A group of youth from the communities of Mother of Christ, Good Shepherd, and Saint Joachim Catholic Churches present this event -- a staged reading and silent auction -- to help them join a pilgrimage to NYC this summer.
