Her self-released debut EP, 2015’s early winter songs from middle america, was written during her first year living in Iowa, where the winter months make those of her hometown, Boston, seem quaint by comparison. Since that first offering, Squirrel Flower has amassed a fanbase beyond the Boston DIY scene and released two more EPs and two full-lengths. The most recent, Planet (i), was laden with climate anxiety, while the subsequent Planet EP marked an important turning point in Williams’ prolific career; the collection of demos was the first self-produced material she’d released in some time. With a renewed confidence as a producer, she helmed Tomorrow’s Fire at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville alongside storied engineer Alex Farrar (Wednesday, Indigo de Souza, Snail Mail). Williams and Farrar tracked many of the instruments, building the songs together during the first week, and then assembled a studio band that included Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen band), Jake Lenderman (aka MJ Lenderman), and Dave Hartley (The War on Drugs) lending their contributions.</p>

Years of close friendship have strengthened a deep dedication to their musical endeavors. The band formed in the winter of 2016 as guitarist/vocalist Travis Harrington and drummer Elise Jaffe continually ran into each other at house shows in college and decided to collaborate. They were soon joined by bassist/guitarist Kameron Vann, Harrington’s best friend since sixth grade and the person he learned guitar beside. By the end of 2017, the three found themselves in the midst of an eventful year: releasing their first EP, embarking on a two-week tour of the East Coast, landing a spot on Raleigh’s Hopscotch Music Festival, and recording what would become their debut album, Not an Exit. In the next year, they added guitarist/bassist/vocalist Yvonne Chazal to the lineup, and set out on several more regional tours of the East Coast and South. In May 2019, they released Not an Exit on NC label Tiny Engines to favorable reception, garnering praise from outsets such as Paste Magazine and Stereogum. In support of its release, the group set out on a self-booked 25-date tour of the East Coast, South, and Midwest.</p>

They’ve made a slow and careful shift from being the solo bedroom recording project of songwriter, Tj Strohmer, to a collaborative, production-focused studio-recorded band. Through their ever-expanding genre palette, range of fidelities, and a long list of collaborators runs a unique mood that ties everything together.</p><p>Informed by his experiences living in Philadelphia and their contrast with his rural southern Maryland upbringing, Strohmer’s sometimes straightforward, sometimes dreamlike lyrics feature scenes of darkness from many different aspects of life. He deals with themes of death, drugs, heartbreak, abuse, and self-destruction, all expressed through an androgynous vocal style, which, combined with the band's lush, often dense orchestral instrumentation gives a beautiful lightness to the heavy subject matter.</p>
