This half day class is designed to show you the power (and complexity) of monitoring SQL Server using wait state analysis. Put simply, wait states are the best and often the only way to answer the question "why is performance slow right now?". If you've ever had to guess, or spent a lot of time tuning a query that didn't make overall performance better you can appreciate how valuable it is to know exactly what is running slow.There are more than a 100 different wait states. Some matter a lot, some you can always ignore, and some of them matter sometimes. It's a little confusing when you start out (and why you should attend this class) but it's also the reason they are so powerful, you can really dig deep into performance concerns, far beyond just looking at a single query plan.The first two hours of this class are focused on helping you understand how to use wait states at work. You'll learn about the most common problems you'll see and some traps to avoid as you decide what to do next next. The final hour of the class is a full demo of SQLGrease, a wait state monitoring tool built specifically for SQL Server. You'll see that while you can work with wait states with nothing more than some queries, there is a lot of value in having tools that provide you with context - execution plans, usage counts, and a lot more.Presented by Franklin Yamamoto and Eddie Djaja of SQLGrease.
