<H2>SQLOrlando - Intro to SQL Server on AWS</H2>
<P>If you're thinking about moving to the cloud or just wanting to make sure you're keeping your skillset current you probably have a LOT of questions about SQL Server on AWS. What's different, better? How is HA/DR handled? What are the best practices and anti-patterns? What does a migration to RDS look like? What does it really cost? If you're asking those kinds of questions, this is the class for you!</P>
<H2>Who Should Attend</H2>
<P>This class is structured for a DBA or a manager with a good understanding of how SQL Server works in an enterprise environment but developers and analysts will also benefit from attending. </P>
<H2>Prerequisites</H2>
<P>None.</P>
<H2>Class Outline</H2>
<P>This class is presented as four modules of approximately 45 minutes each.</P>
<H3>Module 1 - Why AWS?</H3>
<P>We'll start the class with a review of why many companies choose to migrate their SQL Server workloads to AWS.  We'll also talk about why there are very few "doesn't fit" scenarios. For most the biggest decision is whether to use RDS or EC2 (we'll explain the acronyms too!).</P>
<H3>Module 2 - Licensing, Right Sizing, and HA/DR</H3>
<P>Licensing matters for SQL Server, it is not cheap. We'll start by looking at whether you should bring your own license or not. Then we'll move into right sizing your hardware because if you're over provisioned or just running on old hardware you may save money just from picking the right instance type in AWS. We'll finish up by looking at how HA/DR works in RDS, what it costs in EC2, and options like SIOS Datakeeper as a way to avoid using an Enterprise license.</P>
<H3>Module 3 - Migrating to AWS</H3>
<P>This module explores migration strategies. Backup/restore is the obvious option, but if minimizing downtime matters then log shipping and Availability Groups are other choices that can be used. This module also includes a demo of moving data using the AWS migration service.</P>
<H3>Module 4 - Monitoring & Tuning</H3>
<P>You can monitor SQL Server in AWS using the same tools you do now if you're using EC2 instances. If you're using RDS you'll be interested to see what CloudWatch and RDS Performance Insights provide. We'll discuss best practices for configuring SQL in AWS and also how to use RDS parameter groups.</P>
