About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Join us on May 20, 2025 in New York City to experience a Warm Data Lab and Swap. Share stories and share resources.

Now more than ever our communities are divided and polarized. The possibilities for people to respond to events of the polycrisis depend upon their ability to improvise and learn together within their complexity.

While there are no straightforward solutions to our collective problems, when we pay attention to our senses, our relationships with one another, and our curiosity, the difference between how things combine within you and how they combine within me allows for new collective perceptions to emerge. One way to tend to this ability to commune is through the Warm Data practices.

What is a Warm Data Lab?

Developed by Nora Bateson, Warm Data Labs are like the best after-dinner conversations you’ve ever had, with people you may have never met. Participants share their stories and observations about a common question, moving between small groups and inside conversations to explore their perspectives from multiple viewpoints such as family, health, economy, and others. Everyone moves whenever and wherever their curiosity takes them, listening to each other and often sharing whatever occurs to them. At the end, we come back together as one group and share what we’ve noticed, weaving together the sense we’ve been making.

These experiences have been described as a “kaleidoscope of conversation,” packed with enriching stories, laughter, and insight. The experience may nourish the soul, transform our approach to work, life, and community — and, ultimately, open new possibilities that can't be predicted.

What is a Swap?

Think of it as a yard sale where everything is free. A way of making the circular economy more convenient and accessible for all. When we give and receive within our communities it deepens connections and strengthens bonds.

Do I have to bring something?

Nope. You can come just to receive. You can also come just to give. Or do both! You may bring to this swap only 1 BAG of items such as clothes, books, or household items that you no longer want. Please do not bring any furniture, broken items, dirty items, damaged electronics, or home recycling! Additionally, bring your curiosity, open mind, open heart, and perhaps a friend. Everyone is welcome.

What happens at the end? Do I have to bring my unclaimed items home?

No. You only need to take home your new-to-you items, and perhaps new-to-you stories. We will properly rehome, repurpose or recycle the remaining items. The goal is to keep everything out of the landfill at all costs. This includes the waste that events can sometimes create. We partner with PopupSwap and other local organizations for pickups/dropoffs.

When is it?

The gathering will begin at 6:00 PM. We will promptly serve Warm Data at 6:30 PM, finishing around 8:30 PM. Snacks will be offered. Bring your favorite if you'd like.

How do I get there?

Closest subways: A/C/E, N/R/Q/W, or 1/2/3

“There will be no community without first communing”

— Nora Bateson

Warm Data is the relational information that describes the many parts of a system. For example, to understand a family, one must understand not only the family members but also the relationships between them, the context they reside in, the ecosystem that shapes them and that is, in turn, shaped by them –that is, the warm data. Warm Data familiarizes groups of people with the ways in which the contexts of their lives marinate and overlap into each other, and it offers an introduction to the complexity of their own lives so that they may better see the complexity of others. Through this discovery, people begin to see how vital it is to tend to their families, communities, and the land, and they are able to respond to emergencies with warmth.

At times Warm Data is also described more simply as: Information that is alive.

Is it possible to respond to the living world without information that is also alive?

These events are run by our community of Warm Data Hosts trained in the practices of Warm Data by the International Bateson Institute and Nora Bateson.

No two events are the same!
