Spring Migration Bird Walk

Hirundo is a 2,400 acre nature preserve, spanning Pushaw and Dead Streams, Lac d’Or (lake), vast wetlands, includingSilver Maple Floodplain Forest, mixed hardwood and evergreen forests and a 40-acre bog. Only 10 miles from the University of Maine, Orono Campus, visitors paddle canoes free of charge and watch playful river otters, breeding Wood Ducks, Bald Eagles, and Osprey in the tranquil beauty. While hiking, snowshoeing, or cross country skiing, one might encounter moose, deer, red fox, muskrat, beaver, mink, otter, black bear, bobcat, fisher, and ermine.

But the excitement doesn't end there! Spring is a time of frenzied activity as birds engage in courtship rituals, nest building, and preparation for the upcoming breeding season.Whether you're a seasoned birder or new to the world of avian exploration, our Spring Migration Bird Walk offers something for everyone. Some other additional info:<ul><li>We will meet at the Pine Parking area kiosk inside Gate 1</li><li>Beginners are always welcome.</li><li>This walk is BYOB (bring your own binoculars) for the most part but we may have a few to borrow.</li><li>The walk will be slow paced</li><li>Terrain will include gravel paths but also some muddy, uneven trail surfaces as well (about 3/4 mile total)</li><li>Bug repellant and head nets are always encouraged</li><li>Wear sturdy, closed toed shoes, and be prepared for possible mud</li></ul>
