Title: "Affirming Clinical Care for LGBTQ+ communities"

Description:

Ongoing studies show that people who have one or more LGBTQIA+ identity are at increased risk for a number of mental health concerns including Depression, Anxiety, Suicidal Ideation, etc ( Trevor, 2023).

This risk is compounded for those from heteronormative & cisnormative religions and cultures- where family and community rejection is high. Given this, LGBTQ+ people are at an increased need for culturally attuned and competent therapeutic care- particularly in providing gender affirming care for trans and gender diverse people.

This workshop follows the Multicultural Counseling and Therapy model (sue et al. 2019) in increasing awareness, facilitating knowledge and information, and providing clinical skills for working with LGBTQIA+ people and communities. Drawing from our understanding of identity development, trauma ( acute, systemic, sociocultural, and intergenerational) healing, this workshop empowers therapists to feel more confident in their capacity to work with LGBTQIA+ people, as well as increase understanding of the role of self of the therapist.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Have an increased awareness of the impact of heteronormative & cisnormative socio/political climate on queer identity development
  • Have an increased understanding of the complex trauma presentations for LGBTQIA+ people.
  • Be able to apply trauma healing principles and practices for LGBTQIA+ clients, including gender affirming care.
